Cisco IP Phone Password Recovery

Recover or reset the administrative password on Cisco IP phones. Phones are normally provisioned by CUCM, so credentials are managed centrally.

Overview

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

Cisco IP phones receive their configuration, including administrative settings, from Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM). Most phones have no locally-set password — the settings menu is protected by a CUCM-configured unlock value.

Prerequisites

Recovery Steps (preferred — via CUCM)

  1. In CUCM Administration go to Device > Phone and locate the phone.
  2. Update the Settings Access / Admin Password fields for the device.
  3. Apply the configuration — the phone downloads it on its next registration.

Recovery Steps (local unlock)

  1. On the phone keypad press Settings, then the unlock sequence configured by your administrator (**# is the common default).
  2. Once unlocked, Network Configuration and Device Configuration become editable.

Factory reset

  1. Power the phone and hold # until the headset/Mute/speaker buttons flash in sequence.
  2. Press 123456789*0# in order, then choose OK to reset.
  3. The phone re-provisions from CUCM on reboot.
