This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

The Cisco MS250-24 is a Cisco Meraki cloud-managed device — there is no local enable password and no console password recovery in the traditional sense. All administrative access is controlled through the Meraki Dashboard (cloud) using your Meraki account credentials. If dashboard access is lost, the recovery path is account-level, not device-level.

Understanding Meraki Access

Meraki MX (security appliances) and MS (switches) are managed exclusively from the cloud dashboard (dashboard.meraki.com). The device itself has no local CLI password to recover.
The console port on MX models is for diagnostics only — it provides limited boot/debug output and cannot reset passwords or grant admin access.
If you lose your Meraki account password, use the dashboard's forgot password flow (resets via email). If you lose access to the organization (admin removed), another organization admin must re-invite you.
If the device was removed from the organization, it returns to an unclaimed state and can be re-claimed by anyone with the network's claim access — this is a security consideration, not a recovery method.

Recovery Procedure — Factory Reset (device-level, last resort)

Locate the small reset button on the device (pin-hole on MX models, small recessed button on MS switches).
With the device powered, press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds (MX) or until the LED pattern changes (MS — typically ~10 seconds).
Release the button. The device reboots and returns to factory state — it will appear as unclaimed in the dashboard.
Re-claim the device: in the Meraki Dashboard, go to Organization → Inventory, find the device, and claim/assign it back to the network (you need the device serial number).
Re-configure the device — factory reset wipes all local settings (VLANs, DHCP, firewall rules on MX; switchport config on MS). Network-wide settings stored in the dashboard are reapplied when the device is re-added to the network.

Important Notes

Factory reset is destructive for device-local settings, but Meraki stores most configuration in the cloud — re-claiming the device into the same network restores the dashboard-managed configuration.
The reset button procedure varies slightly by model: MX64/MX67/MX68 use a pinhole on the bottom; MS switches use a recessed button on the front. Check the model's hardware guide if the LED pattern doesn't change.
For MS switches, a factory-reset device will show as offline until re-claimed — this is expected.
If the device is stolen or decommissioned, use the dashboard to remove it from the organization (which unclaims it) rather than a physical reset.

Protecting Access

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on Meraki dashboard accounts, maintain a second org admin, and record the device serial numbers. Keep the dashboard recovery email current — it is the only way to reset a lost Meraki account password.
