Dell PowerConnect N4064 Password Recovery

Step-by-step password recovery for the Dell PowerConnect N4064 (PowerConnect N1500-N4000). Console access required.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

This procedure recovers administrator access to the Dell PowerConnect N4064 (Dell PowerConnect/Force10 running FTOS or OS6) when the enable/admin password is lost. FTOS's boot prompt provides a "boot without configuration" option that boots the switch with factory defaults — the startup config is bypassed so you can reset passwords.

Prerequisites

Console cable with a terminal session at 9600 baud, 8N1 (PowerConnect N-series) or 115200 baud (Force10 S-series FTOS — check model). Physical or remote power access to reboot the switch.

Recovery Procedure — Boot Without Configuration

Connect the console cable with the correct baud rate and open a terminal session.
Reboot the switch (power-cycle or reload if you have access).
During boot, when the message "Press <Ctrl>-Z or <!> to enter boot prompt" (or similar) appears, press Ctrl+Z (or type !) to enter the boot prompt.
At the boot prompt, enter: boot-without-config (on some versions: boot no-config).
The switch boots with the default (empty) configuration — no enable password is required.
Enter privileged mode: enable (no password).
Enter configuration mode: configure terminal.
Set a new enable password: enable password <new-password> (or enable secret <new-password> on FTOS).
If a local admin user exists, reset it: username admin password <new-password>.
Exit and save: end, then copy running-config startup-config.
If you have a configuration backup, restore it: copy tftp://<server>/<filename> running-config, then re-save.

Important Notes

Booting without configuration is temporary — the saved startup config remains on flash. Re-saving (copy running-config startup-config) after setting passwords overwrites it.
PowerConnect N-series (N1524–N4064) run OS6 (FTOS-based) — the same boot-without-config procedure applies.
Force10 S4810/S4820T/S6000/S6100 and Z9000 run FTOS — the boot prompt may say ! prompt; type boot-without-config there.
The default admin credentials on FTOS/OS6 are admin / admin (or empty) on factory units.
Baud rate: PowerConnect N-series 9600; Force10 S/Z series FTOS 115200 (check the model's guide).

Protecting Your Configuration

Before recovery, back up the config: copy running-config tftp://<server>/<filename>. After recovery, verify show running-config and re-save.
