Meraki MS / MR / MX / MV / Z Password Recovery

Meraki devices are cloud-managed through the Meraki Dashboard. There is no local administrator password to recover — access is controlled by the Dashboard account.

Overview

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

Meraki hardware has no local administrator password. All configuration and authentication is handled by the Meraki Dashboard, so "password recovery" means regaining access to the Dashboard organisation.

Recovering Dashboard access

  1. Go to the Meraki Dashboard login page and use Forgot password to reset your account password by email.
  2. If you have lost access to the account entirely, contact Meraki support with proof of ownership — the organisation can be transferred to a new administrator.
  3. Once in the Dashboard, per-device credentials (for example MX local status page logins, or MR/MS local page access) are set under the device's local settings.

Gaining access to a device that is already claimed

  1. On the device's local status page (reachable at the management IP over the LAN), use the local settings password configured in the Dashboard.
  2. If that is unknown, the device can be removed from the organisation in the Dashboard and re-added — the local password is then reset.
  3. Physical factory reset is available via the reset button: press and hold for at least 10 seconds. The device returns to the setup state and must be re-claimed.

Note

A factory reset removes the device from the Dashboard but does not delete historical data for the organisation unless you also remove the device there.
