This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

This procedure recovers administrator access to the Netgear GS324T (Netgear ProSAFE managed switch) when the admin password is lost. Netgear ProSAFE switches support a factory reset via the reset button — most managed Netgear switches have no config-preserving password bypass, so a reset plus config restore is the standard recovery.

Prerequisites

Physical access to the switch's reset button (front panel). A backup of the switch configuration if you want to restore settings after the reset.

Recovery Procedure — Reset Button

Locate the Reset button on the switch front panel (small recessed button labeled "Reset" or with a reset icon).
With the switch powered, press and hold the Reset button for 5–10 seconds (on most ProSAFE models, hold until the System/Power LED blinks or flashes).
Release the button. The switch reboots and returns to factory defaults.
After reboot, connect via the web UI or console. The default login is admin with password password (or no password on very old models).
Set a new admin password immediately (System → Management → User Accounts → admin).
Restore your configuration backup: Maintenance → File Management → Restore (upload the saved .cfg/.tar file).

Recovery Procedure — Boot Menu (models with console port)

Connect a console cable (9600 8N1 on most ProSAFE managed switches) to the console port.
Power-cycle the switch and press Enter during boot to access the boot menu.
From the boot menu, select the Factory defaults (or "Clear configuration") option.
The switch reboots with factory settings; log in and reconfigure as above.

Important Notes

The reset wipes all configuration — VLANs, port settings, and management settings are cleared. Always keep a configuration backup.
Default login on most ProSAFE managed switches: admin / password.
Some ProSAFE models (e.g., the smart switches GS1xx/FS1xx series) use a simpler reset: hold reset for 5 seconds to clear settings.
Holding the reset button during power-on on some models enters the boot loader (for firmware recovery via TFTP) instead of a plain reset — release after ~5 seconds to do a settings reset, keep holding longer only for firmware mode if needed.
Baud rate for the console is 9600 on ProSAFE managed switches.

Protecting Your Configuration

Before recovery, back up the config: Maintenance → File Management → Save (download the .cfg or .tar file). Keep the backup off-device. After recovery, restore it and verify settings.
