This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

This procedure recovers administrator access to the Palo Alto Networks PA-3080 running PAN-OS (Palo Alto Networks firewall) when the admin password is lost. PAN-OS provides a maintenance mode at boot with a password recovery option that resets the admin password while preserving the configuration.

Prerequisites

Console cable (RJ-45 on PA-200/220/500/820/850; serial/DB-9 on PA-3000/5000/7000 series) with a terminal session at 9600 baud, 8N1. Physical or remote power access to reboot the firewall.

Recovery Procedure — Maintenance Mode

Connect the console cable and open a terminal session (9600 8N1).
Reboot the firewall (power-cycle or request restart system if you have access).
During boot, watch for the prompt "Press Enter to stop auto-boot" (or the boot menu countdown). Press Enter (or the indicated key) to interrupt the automatic boot.
You reach the PAN-OS boot menu. Select Maintenance mode (type maintenance or select the maintenance option).
From the maintenance menu, select the Password Recovery option (type password-recovery or select the appropriate option).
When prompted, confirm the password recovery (type yes). PAN-OS resets the admin password and reboots.
After reboot, log in as admin with no password (or the temporary password shown on some versions).
Set a new admin password immediately: configure → set mgt-config users admin password → enter the new password → commit.

Important Notes

The maintenance-mode password recovery preserves the configuration — only the admin password is reset.
On VM-Series firewalls, the same maintenance mode is available via the console (through the hypervisor console).
If you also lost access to Panorama-managed settings, re-register the firewall after recovery.
The boot interruption window is short — if you miss it, reboot and try again.
Baud rate is 9600 on all Palo Alto hardware (PA-200 through PA-7000).
PA-7000 series: connect to the console port on the management board (MP), not a line card.

Protecting Your Configuration

Before recovery, export the config: Device → Setup → Operations → Export Named Configuration (or save config + TFTP). After recovery, verify the config loaded and commit the new password.
