Polycom SoundPoint / VVX Phone Password Recovery

Recover or reset the local administrator password on Polycom SoundPoint and VVX IP phones — including the MAC-address method when the admin password is unknown.

Overview

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

Polycom SoundPoint, SoundStation and VVX phones keep a local administrator password that protects the Advanced settings menu and the phone's web interface. The factory default is 456 (some firmware uses 789). On a phone that has been provisioned by a service provider, the admin password is often the phone's MAC address instead.

Reset with the admin password

  1. Press Home (or Menu on SoundPoint) and go to Settings > Advanced.
  2. Enter the administrator password (default 456) and press Enter.
  3. Select Administration Settings > Reset to Defaults.
  4. Select Reset to Factory and confirm with Yes. The phone reboots to factory state.

Reset through the web interface

  1. On a computer on the same network, browse to the phone's IP address.
  2. Log in as Admin with the administrator password (default 456).
  3. Go to Utilities > Phone Backup & Restore > Global Settings and choose Restore.
  4. Wait for the phone to reboot. A factory reset returns the admin password to 456.

Reset when the admin password is unknown (MAC method)

  1. Power the phone and press Cancel during the boot countdown.
  2. During the countdown, press and hold the key combination for the model until the password prompt appears:
    • VVX 101/201, 150/250/300/301/310/350/400/401/410/411/450, VVX 500/501/600/601: 1 3 5
    • SoundPoint IP 320/321/331/335/430, SoundStation IP 5000 / Duo: 1 3 5 7
    • SoundPoint IP 301/501/550/600/601/650, VVX 1500: 4 6 8 *
    • SoundStation IP 6000: 6 8 *
  3. Enter the phone's MAC address (lower case, from the label on the underside) as the administrator password. Use the input-mode key to switch between numeric and lower-case letter entry; correct mistakes with the volume-down key.
  4. Press OK — the phone clears its configuration and restarts.
