SonicWall Firewall Password Recovery

Recover a lost SonicWall administrator password by using the reset button or the password-reset service on the device serial number.

Overview

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for resetting lost or forgotten administrative passwords on enterprise networking hardware. Follow the procedure below carefully to regain access while preserving your device configuration.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with password recovery, ensure you have a console cable, terminal emulation software configured to 9600 baud, and physical access to the device.

Step 1: Establish Console Connection

Connect your terminal cable to the console port of the device and open your serial terminal session.

Step 2: Interrupt the Boot Sequence

Power cycle the hardware and issue a Break key sequence during initial system startup to enter ROMMON mode.

Step 3: Reset Password & Configuration

Bypass startup configuration loading, boot into system software, set your new credentials, and save changes back to non-volatile memory.

Overview

SonicWall appliances support password recovery without wiping the configuration by generating a reset code tied to the device serial number.

Prerequisites

Recovery Steps

  1. At the login page, use the Forgot password / Password reset link and follow the prompts — SonicWall generates a recovery code for the unit.
  2. Enter the recovery code to set a new administrator password.
  3. If the login page is unreachable, connect to the management port and use the same process.
  4. As a last resort, press and hold the Reset button to restore factory defaults, which erases the configuration.

Note

Always keep an exported settings file (.exp) — restoring it re-applies the configuration including credentials.
