A data center or network-closet move succeeds when it is boring. Use this as a living checklist; assign an owner to every section.
Phase 0 — Freeze the truth (1–3 weeks out)
- Full inventory: hostname, PID, serial, rack/U, role, dependencies
- Cable map: both ends labeled; photos of every rack face and rear
- Config backup off-box for every managed device (and timestamps verified)
- Application owners: what breaks if this VLAN/subnet moves?
- Success criteria written: what must be green to leave the old site
Phase 1 — Target site readiness (before anything rolls)
- Power: circuits, phase, PDU layout, redundancy tested under load if possible
- Cooling: capacity vs expected heat; hot/cold aisle confirmed
- Space: rails, ladder rack, fiber tray, grounding
- Network handoff: carrier demarcs, cross-connects, LOA/CFA complete
- OOB/management path available independently of production data plane
- Security access for the install team during the window
Gate: No truck leaves until power + cooling + demarcs are signed off.
Phase 2 — Move kit and logistics
- Anti-static packaging; chassis secured; drives policy followed (move vs wipe)
- Climate-controlled transport for sensitive gear
- Spools of labeled patch cords pre-made for the new rows
- Console kit, spare optics, spare PSUs, cable tester, camera
- Rollback: old site left recoverable until new site passes tests
Phase 3 — Cutover order (do not improvise at 2 AM)
- OOB / management / security appliances that unlock the rest
- Core / spine
- Distribution / leaf
- Services (DNS, auth, firewalls, load balancers) per dependency map
- Access layers and endpoints last
Each layer: bring up → verify → only then proceed. Time-box each gate; if a gate fails, execute the written backout — do not "push through."
Phase 4 — Verification pack
- Critical paths: auth, DNS, firewall policy, default gateway reachability
- Redundancy: pull a link / power supply once in a controlled way
- Monitoring: devices polling, syslog flowing, correct NTP
- Application owner smoke tests with names attached
Phase 5 — Decommission
- Wipe or destroy media per policy
- Remove secrets from configs before any resale
- Update asset system and network diagrams the same week
- Hold old site power until business accepts the new site — then release
